Known as the
Island of Tranquility, Mallorca charms all who visit there
with magical scenery, secluded coves and delightful old
towns and villages.
Palma, the historic capital, defies expectations with shady
boulevards, grand mansions, mazes of old lanes and a Gothic
cathedral. In the northwest is the Sierra de
Tramuntana with towering peaks and plunging cliffs, and the
beautiful towns of Soller, Deià [or Deya] and Pollença [or
Pollensa]. Journey back in time with a train journey
from Palma to Soller - through the mountains and valleys
past unspoiled views. Visit Cala Figuera, a fishing
cove, and relax in one of the bay cafés.
There are watersports of every variety, together with
several golf courses, marinas and stables for horse
riding. If you fancy relaxing on a golden beach framed
by a pine forest, then head for Platja de Formentor, or one
of the island's many other secluded coves. For a taste
of art and culture, visit the Carthusian monastery at
Valldemossa and see the outstanding collection of paintings,
with works by Picasso, Francis Bacon and Henry Moore.
Mallorca offers a wealth of handicrafts such a glass,
pottery and ceramics, but is perhaps best known for its
superb leather goods.
